MILWAUKEE, Jan. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Results of a first-ever nationwide survey of adults on pill-swallowing difficulties, conducted by Harris Interactive(R), reveal that a large percentage (40%) of American adults have experienced difficulty swallowing pills, even though most have had no problems swallowing food or liquid. TROUBLE SWALLOWING PILLS? ...NOT ANY MORE!
If you’re like most of us, you get up every day and start your day by taking your vitamins and supplements. A good and prudent idea for all of us, but for more people than you can imagine, it can be a chore not worth doing. Why? … well, for lots of folks young and old, pill swallowing is not an easy thing. Many just simply can’t get past the big pills (some vitamins appear to be made for elephants), some people suffer from a gag reflex, others have swallowing problems due to health issues (like Dysphagia) and then there are people who basically get so worried that the pill is going to get stuck in their throat and make them gag, that they just won’t take the chance.

Crushing pharmaceutical pills to make them easier to swallow increases their danger
Friday, October 27, 2006 by: Jerome Douglas
(NewsTarget)
If you're used to crushing prescription drug pills to make them easier
to swallow or ingest, you may be doing more harm than good, warns a new
report from medical experts.
According to David Wright -- who led the study -- crushing pills to make
them easier to swallow can cause serious side effects that can sometimes
be fatal, adding that pills often have special coatings that affect how
they are released in the body. Crushing means this complex system is disturbed.

Disorders
of Esophagus More Common In Older Adults
Difficulty swallowing and acid reflux are just two of the conditions related
to the esophagus -- the tube that connects the mouth and stomach -- that
frequently affect older Americans. Side effects of disease, along with
body structures that no longer function properly, often result in esophageal
disorders in the elderly.

When
you're afraid/phobic of consuming any medication (by Cathleen
Henning)
For
some people, concern about taking medication becomes a fear or even a
phobia (avoidance) of taking medication. Such a fear not only involves
medication for anxiety disorders but also all other medication, whether
it's aspirin or antiobiotics. Sometimes the fear causes the person to
have difficulty swallowing pills.
